How to locate and needle Kidney 1 Yongquan (Gushing Spring)

Kidney 1 Location

  • Kidney 1 is located one third of the distance between the base of the toes and the distal part of the heel, in a depression between the 2nd and 3rd metatarsals.

Kidney 1 Needling

  • To needle Kidney 1, use a perpendicular insertion to a maximum depth of 0.5 cun.
  • This area can be very tender so using a fine needle and rapid insertion can reduce any discomfort.

Kidney 1 TCM Theory

Kidney 1 is the Jing-Well point of the Kidney channel.

Jing-Well points are where the Qi of the Channel emerges and begins moving towards the trunk of the body. Jing-Well points are located on the tips of the fingers and toes.

Jing-Well points are used to:

  • Restore consciousness.
  • Clear Heat and Stagnation from the opposite end of the channel.
  • Calm the Shen.

Kidney 1 is also the Wood point of the Kidney channel.

The main TCM actions of Kidney 1 are:

  • It clears Empty-Heat and Empty Fire caused by Yin deficiency in cases of insomnia and severe anxiety.
  • It calms the Shen in cases of acute anxiety.
  • It restores consciousness where resuscitation is needed.
