Measuring and Locating Acupoints

Cun measurement

In acupuncture we use a system of proportional measurement based on the cun which is proportional to the anatomy of the person being measured (i.e. the patient).

The basic units are:

  • 1 cun = one thumb width of the patient.
  • 3 cun = one hand width of the patient.

Locating acupoints

Initially locate the approximate position of the point by using firm (but gentle) palpation to define the anatomical structures – muscles, tendons, bones – in the area.

Then use the cun measurement to refine the point’s location.

As your sensitivity increases, you can use gentle channel palpation in the area to locate a slight depression, a soft spot or a spot that feels ‘sticky’ to locate the actual point.
